What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy uses essential oils and massage for therapeutic and healing effect. Essential oils are 100% natural and are extracted from plants, herbs, flowers, roots and trees etc. The oils are administered via application to the skin or via inhalation. These work to increase energy levels, aid relaxation, promote physical and mental wellbeing.
Aromatherapy is used to holistically treat many physical, mental or emotional problems and also as a means of relaxation or to maintain good health and general well-being. It is now commonly used in hospitals, healthcare settings, hospices and some educational and residential settings.
Essential oils affect our olfactory bulb which is a component of our limbic system. The limbic system is responsible for processing our emotions and memory formation...most of us will have experienced a familiar smell conjuring a memory of a time, place or person. The limbic system is key to this.
When inhaling a blend of essential oils, scent molecules travel from our olfactory nerves to the brain. The brain will process or recognise the aroma which can lead to the desired response i.e. feeling sleepy, calm, alert and so on. This means effectively, that the brain is trained to associate a certain aroma with a cerebral or bodily response.
Unlike some medications, our bodies do not usually develop resistance to or intolerances to essential oils. This is due to the organic chemical nature of essential oils. Though everyone is different and will react differently to each essential oil. So finding the right combination or blend of essential oils can take some trial and error.
However, aromatherapy should not take the place of conventional medical care. Always consult medical professionals for medical attention and advice.
It is important to consult with a properly qualified aromatherapist who has undertaken the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of this particular therapy.
